April 22 & April 23, 2008

Welcome to the Spanish Web Page at St. Martin of Tours!

All Spanish students have been improving their ORAL PROFICIENCY SKILLS!  Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be taking their final Oral Proficiency Test on Wednesday, April 23, 2008.  Sixth Grade students are responsible for completing a visual to accompany the Oral part of their Month/Time Oral Proficiency Quiz.

Kindergarten

¿Cuál es? (Which is it?) is being practiced by Kindergarten Students as they ask each other to identify various zoo animals.  Students have also answered True/False (Cierto/Falso) to a visual of a zoo animal (¿Es el tigre?  ¡Cierto!  ¡Falso!)

First Grade

While continuing with 'I like' and 'I do not like'  (Me gusta y No me gusta); first graders are also learning He/She likes/does not like ((no) le gusta) while incorporating these phrases with Family and Animals.

Second Grade

A la madre le gusta el conejo (The mother likes the rabbit) is being incorporated with the various question words for family and zoo animals.  Students in second grade have increased their listening and speaking skills in the Spanish Language.  Next year in third grade they will reinforce this vocabulary with writing and reading skills as well in Spanish.  They are also able to differentiate between ¿Quién es? vs. ¿Quiénes son? and ¿Cuál es? vs. ¿Cuáles son? (Who is it? vs. Who are they? and Which is it? vs. Which are they?).

Third Grade

Adding and Subtracting numbers in Spanish has been the focus for third grade students recently.  They have learned the words for plus and minus (más y menos) while using numbers 0-100 in Spanish.  Third Grade students were given a homework assignment to write out problems in Spanish.  They must spell out the words!  Example:  (25-5=20  Veinte y cinco menos cinco son veinte).  Students will be reinforcing numbers with el calendario y los días de la semana.

Fourth Grade

Technology and Spanish have been combined in 4th grade as students visit the Computer Lab and use www.portaportal.com and scroll down to the Spanish Block.  Please encourage your child to visit this site, they log in at the visitor box (stmartin) and will be able to access many wonderful sites for all grades and subjects  as well as Spanish.  Fourth Grade students recently identified various insects in the Computer Lab using portalportal as well as practicing them in their classroom.  ( la oruga, la mariposa, la mariquita, el saltamontes, la libélula, el escarabajo, la hormiga, la abeja, el avispa - caterpillar, butterfly, ladybug, grasshopper, dragonfly, beetle, ant, bee and wasp).  Students will combine this vocabulary with gustarse, números, los colores y infinitivos.

 Fifth Grade

Fifth Grade students are preparing for their  final Oral Proficiency for this school year.  Adjectives such as nuevo, viejo, grande, pequeño, limpio, sucio, caro, barato (new, old, big, small, clean, dirty, expensive, cheap) with the verbs SER y ESTAR (to be and to be) and house vocabulary are included in this Oral Proficiency.  Fifth Grade students are responsible for creating a visual to accompany their Oral Profiency.  Each student will be presenting on an individual basis.

Sixth Grade

Sixth Graders have been preparing for their final Oral Proficiency in Spanish for this school year.  Each student is responsible for creating a visual to accompany their Oral Proficiency.  Each student will present individually on Wednesday, April 23, 2008.  Students will have an opportunity to review los meses, la fecha y el verbo SER on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in the Computer Lab while using www.portaportal.com.  The weather and seasons are also continuing to be reinforced for sixth grade Spanish students.

Seventh and Eigth Grades

Seventh and Eighth Grade students will also demonstrate their Oral Proficiency Skills on Wednesday, April 23, 2008.  Each student has been studying 16 questions and has created appropriate answers.  Each student has a visual that corresponds to the questions and will demonstrate individually.  Students have reviewed class vocabulary, gustarse (to like), question words (¿De quién son los zapatos? - Whose shoes are these?) as well as the preposition 'de' of/from.  Students will be in the Computer Lab on April 22, 2008 to review grammar and practice with Señora Vega on an individual basis for their presentation on April 23, 2008.
